Article Highlights
To a diehard poke lover, there are few things in life more beautiful than those perfect little pinkish cubes. Yet to many who bear witness to the toppling bowls of raw fish, the dish begs the question of what exactly is poke? First, to spare you from any semantic snafus let’s work on pronunciation. Channel your inner island accent here folks! Poke, pronounced po-kay, is not the annoying finger jab or awkward Facebook Messenger feature. Poke stems from the Hawaiian word meaning “to cut or slice”. It’s a dish seen throughout the islands; fresh fish is sliced into small cubes then traditionally tossed with fresh seaweed, a pinch of salt, crunchy onions and shoyu sauce. Served on a cooked bed of rice, poke is best eaten while the rice is hot and the fish is still cool. As poke-fever spreads to the mainland, restaurants are more frequently including the dish on their menu and build-your-own-bowl shops are popping up in cities everywhere. Piles of avocado, local veggies and elaborate swirls of artisan sauces are putting smiles on faces far beyond the Hawaiian Islands. While Hawaii indulges the trends, typically ingredients are kept to a minimum. In Maui the focus and aloha are dedicated to preparing amazing fish.
Our trip to Maui in Summer of 2017 allowed us to indulge a little (okay, a lot) in the motherland of incredible poke. Preparing a trip to the islands yourself? Add these poke stops to your itinerary and discover some of the best poke Maui has to offer!

Foodland Poke
Perhaps not the best kept poke secret on the islands is Foodland poke. Just keep an eye out for the grocery bags with strangely appetizing cartoon poke bowls on them! Looking to satiate your poke fix without busting the budget? Foodland grocery stores are plentiful around Maui and offer lots of styles to choose from, from ahi to shellfish to tako (octopus)! Now, don’t expect a quaint and cute little grocery store specializing in artisan poke. Foodland is still the powerhouse of Hawaii grocery shopping. However, erase everything you think you know about grocery market fish counters. Your face might be looking all kinds of confused, but rest assured Foodland is home to some of Maui’s most amazing poke. Made fresh daily it is righteously ‘ono (delicious)! The amazing ocean life surrounding Maui provides sustenance to the island year round. Delicious food, particularly well prepared fish, is a pillar in the Hawaiian culture.

Eskimo Candy
Aside from having a really adorable name Eskimo Candy is also home to some of the island’s freshest fish, in a low key environment. Step into the fish market, there’s sure to be locals lunching and fishermen bringing in the daily catch. The shop serves up four kinds of ahi poke; shoyu, furikake, wasabi and spicy on a bowl of rice for $13.99 USD. The poke here is soft, well prepared and so fresh that if you arrive too early, you might have to wait for the fish to be brought in. Located in Kihei, Eskimo Candy is a great place to stop for more than just their bangin’ poke bowl. The menu includes mouth watering fish and chips, realllllyyyy good coconut shrimp and believe it or not slabs of baby back ribs! A great place to bring the whole ‘ohana to.
Tin Roof
A packed yet unassuming shop close to the airport, the location makes Tin Roof ideal for your first stop in Maui for poke. As you pull up to the strip mall don’t be daunted by the line of people hanging outside, service here is fast and efficient. Be prepared to order to-go, and enjoy your grinds amid the kitesurfers at nearby Kanaha Beach Park. Or better yet, pick some up early and chow down before getting out on the water yourself!
Chef Sheldon Simeon of Top Chef fame showcases his amazing flavors with the unique menu at Tin Roof. It’s quality over quantity here. There’s one ahi poke bowl to choose from, typically either shoyu or spicy depending on the day. Expect to pay around $14 USD for a bowl packed generously with cubes of fish and high quality ingredients. While there, pick up a dime bag of house made furikake. Best sprinkled over everything Hawaiian (well, maybe excluding shave ice!), furikake consists of dried fish, seaweed, sesame seeds and spices.
Like Poke?
Like Poke? Well, funny you ask…. we love it! Check out this amazing poke bowl located near the Maui airport. Situated next to Costco lies an assortment of food trucks that offer up something for any palate! Not shy with sauces, Like Poke serves numerous styles of poke including a gluten free option. On an island famous for poke, Like Poke embraces the challenge and distinguishes their menu from others by serving poke fried as well as baked in addition to the raw. While raw unquestionably holds the trophy for poke in our book, trying baked poke was a unique (and tasty!) experience. Served with furikake dusted rice and fresh greens, the baked poke is something you surely won’t see anywhere else. Douse your meal in some homemade (or is it truckmade?) “crack sauce” and dig in! Price varies depending on the size of bowl, but remains typical to comparable bowls on the island. Thirsty? Try one of Like Poke’s yummy housemade lemonades with flavors like pineapple li-hung and strawberry basil. Make sure to save room for açaí at neighboring food truck Mo ‘Ono.
Bonus Round
Honorable mention of top poke bowls in Maui goes to the South Maui Fish Company Food Truck. This was one of the more expensive bowls we had on the island at $18 USD. However, friendly customer service and a generous portion some of the softest, well-cut fish makes up for the slight price difference. Located in Kihei, everything here is made fresh to order. The poke is prepared simply, with a few ingredients doing big work to make your taste buds sing with aloha. Choose from either spicy or traditional style. Poke here is also available by the pound.
